What is Dailymotion?

Dailymotion is a video-sharing site that was launched in 2005. The website allows users to upload, share and embed videos, as well as comment on the content of other user’s uploaded videos.

Users can access DailyMotion from any device including mobile devices like smartphones or tablets (Android, iOS), TV sets with an internet connection, computers, and laptops.

Dailymotion is available in 14 different languages including English, Spanish, Russian and Arabic.

The website also offers a few features to its users such as uploading videos from mobile devices by using the DailyMotion app on iOS or Android (with an internet connection); streaming live events with their “Live” tab; sharing playlists of videos; uploading videos to a user’s own video channel and embedding DailyMotion player on their website.

Dailymotion was founded in 2005 by the trio of France Telecom, Vivendi Universal Games (later sold its stake), and Orange S.A., and launched in December 2006 under the name MySpaceFrance but later changed it to Daily Motion.

This video-sharing website is the second most visited in France. In 2009, Dailymotion became a public company with stocks listed on Euronext Paris (ISIN: FR0004026879) and at that time had more than 100 million visitors per month. The site was primarily used by people living outside of the US as an alternative to YouTube.

In 2012, French media conglomerate Vivendi bought out the company for a reported $342 million and began its strategy of international expansion by opening an office in Los Angeles with plans to target other English-speaking countries that have large Francophone populations like Canada and South Africa. The site later became the sixth most visited website globally by July 2013. In 2015, the company launched a new version of its website with exclusive content that is only available to premium users.
