What is a knit?

A knit is a type of fabric that can be made from various materials such as cotton, wool or polyester. Knit fabrics are popular for their soft and stretchy feel, making them perfect for knit tank tops and knit dresses!

What should I look out for when choosing my knit dress?

Look at the different types of knit fabric with your knit dress. Different knit fabrics have different qualities, such as how stretchy they are or what type of material it is made from. Think about the style and colour you’re looking for in a knit tank top or knit dress before making your choice! Knit dresses come in many styles and colours to suit any taste. Be aware of what you are wearing knit tank tops and knit dresses with. Knit fabrics work well as an underlayer, but they can also be worn on their own. Make sure that your knits match the rest of your outfit!

Now let’s find a knit dress or knit top to add to our wardrobe!

How to stitch a knit tank top?

Step one:

Knit tank with the same colour yarn and needles as you used for knitting. Cut two pieces about 30 cm wide by 40 cm long (or wider if desired) from knit fabric.

Step two:

Using knitting needles, knit both pieces together to form a tube. Make sure your stitches are loose enough that you can pull the knit up over your head or arms easily without it pulling too much on the seams of the knit fabric. This will make sense once you knit your knit tank.

Step three:

Set the two knit pieces to one side for now, then make up a tube of knitting as you did before. This time, knit the first piece into this new tube so that it’s knit on both sides in a way that is similar to what would result if you knit a scarf.

Step four:

When both pieces are knit into the tube, take one piece of knitting out of the other to make it easier to see what’s happening. Knit together as before until there is only about 15 cm remaining unknitted at each end (this will be the strap section).

Step five:

Knit each end together into the tube of knitting to join them. When you get about halfway down on one side, thread a length of sewing cotton through your needle and sew back up from the other side just as before. The whole process is repeated until both ends of the tank top are knit together and finished.

Step six:

The stitching will be on the inside, so use a contrasting colour for this section if you want to make it more visible. Once again using your sewing needle, sew up either side of each strap as before but stop about 12 cm from the top, so that your fabric is still wide enough to knit another strap section.

Step seven:

Then repeat step four. Now you have two straps of knitting on each side (four in total). You need to knit these together into a tube shape just as before but this time it will end with knit stitches on both sides.

Step eight:

Finally, you need to cast off the knitted edges of your straps by weaving them through each other as before, but this time always using a knit stitch until they are completely enclosed in one another. Once again use contrasting coloured thread if you want it to stand out.
