The cost of medical care is increasing across the globe, and the potential consequences are terrifying. It’s no secret that different countries have different healthcare systems. While some countries are covered under a public healthcare system, others have to pay thousands for treatment. There are enormous differences between each countries healthcare system. In some countries, a life-saving surgery could bankrupt them without medical insurance.

How much does it cost to break your leg?

The National Accident Helpline researched the cost of healthcare around the world. They looked at the cost of medical care for a broken leg in each country. Unsurprisingly, the USA has the most expensive medical care in the world. It would cost £25,550 to treat a broken leg in the USA – compared to £3,363 in the UK. The USA was closely followed by Spain and Singapore – while the UAE, Argentina and India have some of the lowest medical costs.

Health insurance is increasing

Most countries have some kind of universal health care system – but patients often end up paying additional costs for treatment. In 2020 alone, 28 million people did not have health insurance in the USA. On average, health insurance in the USA costs $7,470 per year for an individual or $21,342 for a family. The cost of health insurance is on the rise, and many people cannot afford it. Some even avoid seeking treatment for a health condition because they cannot afford the bill. Chronic and mental health conditions account for 90% of healthcare costs.

What can you do to keep yourself as safe as possible?

If you are unemployed in the USA, you can look at more affordable health insurance plans through Marketplace. You may be able to find a discount based on your income and household. There is also assistance available if you are the victim of medical negligence. In some countries, there may be a universal healthcare system available for residents to visit. Do your research and check out what options are available if you get sick. It’s better to be prepared in advance than to wait until you’re in an emergency situation.

Private medical care is expensive

Switzerland also has an expensive healthcare system. On average, they pay £2,016 per year on out-of-pocket healthcare costs. In the UK, only 21% of healthcare expenses go to private healthcare costs. However, NHS waiting lists are extremely high these days and more people are turning towards private healthcare.

It is becoming increasingly expensive to receive healthcare around the world.
